On 2nd August, 2025, the SchoolMall team touched down in the beautiful coastal city of Mombasa for a memorable team-building retreat. Our first stop was the famous Pembe za Ndovu landmark at the heart of the Mombasa Central Business District, followed by a fascinating tour of the historic Mombasa Old Town. With its narrow winding streets, Swahili architecture, and rich history, the Old Town felt like stepping into another world. After a day of sightseeing, we sampled the delicious local Swahili cuisine before retiring for the night.
The team-building activities began at around 10 a.m. on the second day, set against the stunning backdrop of the Indian Ocean. The blue waters, golden sandy beaches, and calming ocean breeze created the perfect atmosphere for a day of bonding, fun, and learning.
Ice Breaker: Setting the Tone
We began with lighthearted icebreaker activities that got everyone laughing, talking, and feeling comfortable. From quick introductions, light banter, to humorous team challenges, these activities helped melt away any formality, encouraging openness and building a rapport among colleagues. It was the perfect way to shift from a work-focused mindset to one of connection and camaraderie.
Communication: Speaking and Listening with Purpose
The team-building exercises were designed to sharpen communication skills. Teams worked together to complete challenges that could only be solved through clear, concise, and active communication. Whether it was giving directions to a blindfolded colleague or coordinating with other members to solve a challenge, each game highlighted the importance of listening just as much as speaking — lessons we can take back to the workplace.
Trust: Building Confidence in Each Other
Trust-building games tested our ability to rely on one another. Activities like guided obstacle courses and partner problem-solving tasks showed that success comes when we let go of doubt and depend on our teammates’ strengths. A culture of trust leads to better teamwork, faster decision-making, and greater resilience in the face of challenges.

From group problem-solving tasks to beach relays, collaboration was at the heart of the exercise. The challenges reminded us that every individual plays a vital role in achieving the shared organizational goals at SchoolMall Limited. It was inspiring to see team members encouraging one another, brainstorming solutions, and celebrating wins together — a reflection of the collaborative spirit that drives SchoolMall forward.
Employee Motivation: Recharging for the Year Ahead
Beyond the games and challenges, the day was also about rekindling our passion for what we do. The laughter, fresh air, and shared memories renewed our sense of purpose.
